Band Photo Retouch for C&C

Hello, first time posting in the forum, thanks for reading my thread. This is a recent band photo I took in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. I'm just learning the ropes of retouching and I would appreciate any insightful comments and constructive criticism!

I processed the RAW files into two different exposures, one for the band memebers and one for the background. I blended these using layer masks, and then did some dodging and buring on the rocks to enhance texture. Desaturated the water and sky as they had an ugly brown colour. Also used curves and an overlay B/W layer for contrast.

Any other suggestions to make this retouch better?

Photo info: Canon 5D (original), 70-200mm f/4 L, Canon 430EX and 2 285HV's triggered with CyberSyncs. Shot at ISO 100, at about 98mm f/8.

Johnker, Welcome to RetouchPRO Hope you enjoy your stay here and make lots of friends. Poke around, ask questions, offer help, have fun!

If you use Photoshop you can post fairly large pictures which are under 100k using the 'save for web' function in Photoshop as described here: Size, Quality and/or Format your Attached Images.. (Click here)

How to attach Files/Images to your Posts or Threads: (Click here)

If you want to post a larger resolution that is over 100K then you can host your image elsewhere and attach a link in the thread (as you did here), but also please attach an under 100K version (so the thread remains useful in the future, regardless of external links).

It looks to me as if you were going for a popular look for bands. The photo looks very dark, shadows blocked up, and unappealing to me.. The ambiance of the water is great but I feel the focus should be on the band.. the water drops were very distracting to me so I took them out..

The first sample/suggestion is a crop, move the bird, brightened the clothes and do some selective sharpening

In the second sample/suggestion I used an action from "Richard Houtby" (a Draganizer type action) and blended it back with the first sample to soften the effect so it was not so dramatic.

~~~Original~~ ~~ 1st Sample~~ ~~ 2nd Sample~~
Re: Band Photo Retouch for C&C
Thanks for the welcome and the response. Looks like a great site I'm looking forward to participating. I know what you're saying about the crop, I just liked having a sort of dynamic element in a group portrait. Most band portraits are cropped much closer such as the way you've done it. I think I'll crop it down for the portfolio Cool effect, thanks for taking the time!
John
Not sure but it looks like the people are cut out of the background. There seems to be a halo effect around them, especially around the girls left side. You may want to burn those edges to help set them into the rocks.
Re: Band Photo Retouch for C&C
i used to shoot live bands and did some promo work also, so i did to this what i would typically do to those photos
I retinted the sky and water blue, did a slight crop, and enhanced the details with a few diff. high pass and unsharp mask filters
Hi, what do u think about cropping a little bit the image? I find it a little bit not much focused on the subject. What do u think about it?
