Unhappy Late Father

Hi, I have been trying for some time to do a black & white photo of my late father (attached) but can not get it right due to the darkness to his left side of face. I have tried levels, curves and shadow / highlight, when I get the lightness better I then lose the quality. Has any one have any suggestions please. robboard

Re: Late Father

It looks like the sample has some paper texture that has been partially removed and is showing.. or it may be Jpeg artifacts... none the less, do you have a scan in color with all the automatic settings turned OFF at a much larger size... at least an 8X10 @ 300 Res Minimum.. the texture might be able to be removed using the FFT filter..

You can post a larger resolution elsewhere and attach a link in the thread to the site that is hosting the larger image.

Other Hosts if you do not have your own site: ImageVenue.com (3Meg max, free) pixentral.com (2Meg max, free) photobucket.com (1 Meg max free, 5 Meg PRO) mediafire.com (100 Meg per file, free)

To even the face I just used a soft history brush set at Screen and a lower opacity

Re: Late Father

You could use curves first to lighten the area.

Re: Late Father

I used shadow/highlights set to these amounts then set the color adjustment to 25

Used CS4 B&W to convert, Image/Calculations (red & green channels in soft light mode) to an alpha channel then Apply Image to lighten his face; extracted him to a new layer and replaced BG, curves for contrast, added noise and a darken vignette.

Cheers.

Re: Late Father

Thanks for the advice, I have found the original photo, it came from one of those old 'Polaroid instamatic' cameras probably why I had trouble with it!!

Re: Late Father

I duplicated the original layer twice set to screen and used a mask.
