Re: blown out face help pls

I slowly nudged some detail into the cheek, by using a number of adjustment layers (levels, selective color, hue/sat).

I think it will be hard to totally even out the lighting and keep it realistic. (I hope someone proves me wrong )

edit: replaced attachment, lightened eye

Re: blown out face help pls

I just made a duplicate layer and changed the blend mode to multiply and masked out the some of the darker side of the face and background. It all depends on how much you want to keep the shadow on the face. I kind of like the shadow, so I retained much of it to keep the feeling of the direction of the original lighting.

The idea came from suggested approaches as proposed in recent Dan Margulis books.

His approach is not so much to learn photoshop as it is to understand it. From what I've read he's a more realistic as opposed to creative retoucher, which suits my temperament.

I noticed that you advised some LAB color space moves so I'd be willing to bet that you're familiar with Mr. Margulis.
