blown out face help pls

Hello All,

Please can someone show me how to get rid of the baby's blown out left side of her face I've tried using several layers with multiply but didn't like the results. I would like for both sides of the face to be similar and get rid of the severe light on her face.

Any reply would be much appreciated also if anyone could tell me what to do or how they've achieved their results I would be most grateful

many thanks in advance.

Re: blown out face help pls

I would roughly select the blown out areas with the lasso tool, feather the selection ~20px and use a new "Selective Color" adjustment layer.
Change the mode to "Absolute", go to the whites and remove some Cyan, add Magenta, Yellow and Black.
Reduce the opacity if necessary and use dodge & burn to sculpt the face a little.

Re: blown out face help pls

try;
Open in camera raw and move the recover slider to the right

or try;
As long as it's white you can't add any color to it. With a levels or curves adjustment make the lights of the whole image darker (you can mask this adjustment out where you don't want it)

make a selective color adjustment to whites

or try;
duplicate the image
change mode to LAB
make a gradient from some of the colors in the face - sorry, you'll just have to experiment (I would probably try to get close and then clip a Hus/Saturation adjustment layer to the gradient). Change the gradient map adjustment layer's blending mode to 'color' (LAB can create an impossible color where there is no luminosity)
flatten
copy and paste back into your original image
when PS converts the LAB file back to RGB it will make some calculations to darken and color the blown area

HTH

Re: blown out face help pls

Well the brighter and white area of the image had a value of 235 so even in rgb one could paint some color in. So what I did was place a blank layer above the original layer and used a color blending mode and then painted in the desaturated areas with color obtained from other parts of the face.

I also darkened the brighter areas slightly.

Re: blown out face help pls

Helen, normally I would use one of the methods suggested above. However, this image is too high key and going those routes will too easily impact areas that you do not want affected. I think the most effective path to take here would be a conventional Dodge & Burn Layer - actually you will only need to Burn. After dodging the bright area a shift in saturation will occur. This can be quickly corrected with a Hue Sat Adj layer.
Attached is a quick 3 minute burn and correction. I did not take the time to do a neat Dodge but you can see the direction I was heading in.
BTW, your image is embeeded with a custom color profile, probably after you ran a Spyder calibration.
Regards, Murray

Re: blown out face help pls

I'd tone map it. Then layer it over the original...

Re: blown out face help pls

I had practice to use selective color adjustment.

This okay?
