Thanks again. I think I get most of this but a few things are confusing me.

What kind of luminance mask is that? Is that a lights/shadows or midtones one?

Also what is the group is after that - lichhter + tiefen? I don't get what those layers are. :-(

After that there is a levels adjustment layer clipped with something. Is that a stamp visible desaturated set to soft light and 50% opacity?

After that it's all good but those 3 groups I don't quite get. Hoping you can clarify.

Thanks again

i think the 'dragan-effect' is now a collective term for dark portraits of wrinkled people with liver problems, hrhr

anyway, the work was fun and because I was asked several times for my workflow, feel free to get the (small) .psd from rs, its worth a thousand words

http://rapidshare.com/files/38309521...8_1000_NEU.psd

EDIT... ok, only a few words for better understanding

notice, the original file was 3200x2400, some steps get other results with smaller files.

01_GESAMTKONTRAST BILD
increase global contrast with USM (sharpen - unsharp mask), i used max radius (250)
a layer mask to protect the shadows a bit (luminosity mask inverted, selection filled with gray), not important

02_FARBE1
changed the colour, red more yellow and less cyan (the thing with the liver, hrhr)

03_LICHTER+TIEFEN
means to accentuate highlights and shadows (a bit) with this tip:
http://photodevotion.com/2009/07/amy...er-retouching/

04_DETAILKONTRAST
on a merged an desaturated layer i used tonal contrast (nik color efex) to get some more details. its very edgy so i soften the result with 'reduce noise 10-10-0-0'. this group has only a little influence

05_FORM
darken unimportant parts and try to generate a kind of light-direction, some d&b on a gray-layer to accentuate the profile

06_FARBE2
some more selective color works and finally

07_HINTERGRUND
the background

you can have a look at each group of layers and see what happens... there are still many possibilities to do some more finetunig or get similar results with other workflows. some layers are usefull, some are not...

choose YOUR favourite one

andreas
Hey Kombine! Thanks for sharing the PSD file, wonderful work

Re: My try on DRAGAN EFFECT

I wanted to try the Dragan effect so I shot this photo of my neighbor because I think he has the desired facial texture to go well with this effect. I kinda liked the results but it is missing something. I am hoping some of you will have a play with this photo and show me some different Dragan looks...

Thanks,
Dak
