shadow/highlights then warmed up the photo.
the hair seems to show some red highlights, so I lightened and warmed the overall look.

Re: removing shadows from face and neck

Hi, I think the Shadows and Highlights box needs some explaining (I remember the first time I tried to use it!) First duplicate the layer and go to Image?Adjustments?Shadowsand Highlights - When the dialogue box opens click on the "Show more options" box -
Then try these settings and after save them as defaults - Shadows Amount 10% Tonal Width 25% Radius 200px and Highlights Amount 5% Tonal Width 25% Radius 200px -
Now move your shadows Amount slider until you see what you like -
Good Luck and I hope this helps

Re: removing shadows from face and neck

I selected the shadows using quick mask in CS5, feathered the selection and saved it to an apha channel. I then set a color sampler in the desired lighter area and one in the shadowed area. With the selection active, used curves to match the luminoisty and color of one to the other 'by the numbers'. Any seams were blended with the clone tool and healing brush.
I thought that the BG should be darker and color matched so I selected her with the quick selection tool and the red channel, refined the selection. extracted her to a new layer and filled the BG. I then merged down, denoised, used curves for lighting/contrast and sharpened a bit.
