Newbie Retouching with Adobe Raw & Bridge CS4

In don't know if this has already been posted somewhere in here but I just watched this video by Russell Brown on Adobe TV and it showed me things I didn't know were possible in Adobe Raw. Especially since he was using jpg's for his source images.

Re: Retouching with Adobe Raw & Bridge CS4

If you have raw data, you absolutely want to conduct as much work as possible in a raw converter like ACR. Its instruction based, non destructive. Not the same with existing rendered images (JPEG, TIFF) but assuming you start with high quality JPEGs, there are some advantages to doing the work in Adobe Camera Raw (ACR) but very few of the major advantages to doing this from raw data in the first place. When it comes time for precise pixel editing, you simply have to render the data and work in Photoshop.

Re: Retouching with Adobe Raw & Bridge CS4

Yes, Gunner, I used to think that it was better to work in Photoshop on my images, and would only make necessary adjustments in Camera Raw such as brightening a slightly underexposed image. When I upgraded to CS5 and went thru some training videos (Lynda.com and Julianne Kost- AdobeTV), then I learned what Andrew posted above - that it is actually better to work in Camera Raw as much as possible. Not only is it quicker (not taking time to render actual pixels in the image, but simply adding a list of instructions for Photoshop to read later), but it is of course reversible and non-destructive. I hadn't even noticed how quickly ACR worked to make changes, let alone think about it, but I've certainly sat and waited for PShop to run through its work on a large file. One more reason to shoot raw - so we can get the most out of our images and do it faster and safer.

All good info. One can do alot in ACRand then save it in a different format thereby keeping the original file intact. That I like.

Re: Retouching with Adobe Raw & Bridge CS4

I was flabbergasted the other day to find out that Bridge has an output module. When did they add that? I keep finding features that I didn't know were there.

I guess I was lucky enough to start with Kelby's 7-steps which is the workflow you describe...get it as close as you can in ACR and only if it still needs tweaking take it into PS...and I have to admit the better I get at photography the less PS my images 'need'

Re: Retouching with Adobe Raw & Bridge CS4

I was reading a book by Derrick Story on PSCS4, which is practically dedicated on improving photographs with ACR. This sounded weird to me at 1st time, but now, it has changed my thoughts.
