A try at retouching

My name is Dimi. I'm a photographer from Australia and have tried to give retouching a try before but haven't really achieved results I've been happy with - so most of my photos are pretty much as shot with slight adjustments. (Can be seen on

Here is a stock photo I found on this forum and tried to give my hand at retouching.

Here is the edit.

Credit to Ian Zander for the original.

Re: A try at retouching

Here's my too cents, I'm no specialist (I'm just beginning!!!!)
But here's my thoughts - attached....As for the skin tone it's a bit too porcelain-like to me, but I understand it's was made according to your taste (not mine)

I like what you did with her lips. What would happen if you darkened the background rather than blur it. I shot f11 I think on these cause I wanted you to see the bg but I did get more spill than I would have liked with light and feel that the model doesnt pop like she should. I agree with the comment above that her hand does have a bony feel and maybe to soften that up some.

How did you do her lips. The gloss, glow you created is quite fantastic.

You gave it a nice try, what i would like to ad to the things the others already said is this;
the whole tone of her skin has a bit to much magenta + there in here arm way to much magenta if you compare it to her face. You should town that a tat down via selective color or hue/saturation using masks. Good luck!

Re: A try at retouching

thanks for the feedback. always good to learn!

with her lips I added a brightness/contrast adjustment layer. upped the brightness and contrast and filled the layer black then with the eraser tool tried to mimick how the light would hit the lips and create gloss with a soft small brush. played with opacity of course to get it so suit the rest of the highlights.
