This is what i find so odd about the "without the raw its hard to tell" while thats true when I see a good portrait that looks like softlighter or daylight I sort of expect it to look like the color you see in the ungraded photo. the raw still may look a bit different but you could do this effect form there and its a good place to start from.

ah, hahahaha.....That picture of Mendes and the wife is one of the most famous photoshop disasters out there. Check out his and her left arm. Awesome. From what I understand, that was done right after she was dropped by her long time Vanity Fair retoucher, Box, due to her poor financial situation, or, er, should I say, bankruptcy. So, she turns to one of her underpaid assistants and probably says, hey, you know photoshop, dontcha? And, that's what you get.
