Beauty Shot Tell me what you think

Let me know what you think guys. This is my second beauty shot. I'm still learning both how to light and how to post process specifically for beauty shots.

Nice picture, but the retouch looks a bit fake on the skin. Some borders of the hair looks too hard and there is a little hard/deep shadow over the left eye which unbalances the image a bit, since the light on her face is not so dark.

Re: Beauty Shot Tell me what you think

Great shot for your second time out!!

Beautiful choice of model...its great that you gained the visual value of a makeup artist working with you...it really classes up the models look...so YOU look good.

Good beauty dish kind of lighting...very clean and clear image. Id love to see the light 1 foot further back and maybe a foot higher or maybe to the left a bit...the shadow on the nose is longish and there is a bit of shadow issue in the eyes. Finding the sweet spot of positioning the beauty dish is an important experimentation and exercise to go through...because its edges are where the impact comes from sometimes depending on the size and closeness of the dish. If you brought up the ambient studio light just a stop with a reflector board...then the shadows would open up a bit...or you could also manage it in post.

The skin is a bit overly smoothed for the beauty of the image and model...see what happens when you back it off a bit...she might be pretty nice without too much help in Photoshop.

Keep experimenting...youre getting lucky early on having such a lovely model, a makeup teammate to work with and some nice lighting tools...keep on growing!!

Cheers,

GlamGuru, just curious as to what methods you used, to get to this point? Some insight would be appreciated...

Nice model and def nice makeup but have to agree that your light position is just slightly off! Have to say though I have been working in the industry a long time and have worked with people who have been shooting for twenty years and they couldn't have taken the pic so for your second time you should pat yourself on the back! Defo ease off on the skin smoothing, it's nice to see some texture especially when your retouching beauty pics, you want to make them look good but still real, it's not the front cover of OK!

The skin has too less detail. Search for "Frequency Separation" in the web. There was a Thread in ModelMayham with the title "High Pass sucks". It contains some useful links to frequency separation. With this method you can smoothen the skin while you maintain the microstructure.

This is about skin retouching with frequency separation:

The author of the video uses a photoshop action, which you can find here:
