Welcome to RetouchPRO Hope you enjoy your stay here and make lots of friends. Poke around, ask questions, take part in some of the discussions, challenges, etc., have fun!

What version of Photoshop are you using... most of the newer versions have a Shadow/Highlight Adjustment under the Image>Adjustments menu

If you want to post a larger resolution that is over 100K then you can host your image elsewhere and attach a link in the thread as you did here, but also please attach an under 100K version (so the thread remains useful in the future, regardless of external links).

You can post fairly large pictures which are under 100k using the 'save for web' function in Photoshop as described here: Size, Quality and/or Format your Attached Images.. (Click here)

Re: Trying to Remove Shadows

You can use Image>Adjust>Shadow-Highlight to brighten the shadows overall. This will solve most of your problem. If you find the shadows on the faces still a little too deep, you can dodge them with the Dodge tool or a Dodge layer with curves, 50% soft light or one of many other dodging techniques found on this site. You can add a Vibrance Adj layer or use a Hue/Sat adj layer to reduce the saturation of the entire image or just the background.

Re: Trying to Remove Shadows

Hey guys, thanks for the help.

I am using CS4, and I also have CS5. I need to get the picture framed later this week, and have tried so many approaches, but am not making very much progress haha. Every time I think I get something that works, I zoom out and it has a very, very plastic feel. I was also hoping to make the old man less fat but haven't even looked into whether that's possible.

I know it's probably frowned upon, but would anyone mind giving it a shot?

Re: Trying to Remove Shadows

Hi throwitdown,

welcome to RetouchPRO!!!

Here is my shot:

  • Minimized the shadows in your faces ... (didn't remove them completely because it would have looked unnatural)
  • Blurred the trees in the background a bit to bring the focus on you two.
  • Did a very light slimming 'job' on your dad's stomach.
Is this what you are looking for?

That one looks aammmaaazzzinng! Can you include the entire image?

I finally got to something I like all right, spent hours and hours, I know, I suck...but what do you think? Mainly used dodging, burning, clone stamp, and patching.

Flora, as always REAT work!!

Throwitdown, I think you have nailed it!

My try using the same tools as the OP with a blended tone map thrown in plus a bit of sharpening

A little bigger version here

Re: Trying to Remove Shadows

Hi again throwitdown,

thank you for you kind feedback and so glad you liked my retouch!!

You did a very good job on the picture ... for the overwhelming yellow/green you could try to correct it using a Selective Colors Adjustment Layer.

That's what I did in my corrected version (Attachment)

0lBaldy,

thank you for your kindness and Great job yourself!!!

Re: Trying to Remove Shadows

Thanks everyone. Here is the final picture I had framed. Glad I learned a little bit about photoshop, although I still don't think I'm very good.

what do you think?

Remember, here is the original, or in the attachment in the original post.
