Re: Russel Brown adds to Calvins technique

Julian, thanks for the link. I learned this effect late last year from Calvin and have found it very useful. Russell has added some new twists employing Smart Objects and making the effect fully non destructive. However I prefer Calvins flow which I find much faster, and preferable for visualizing the intensity. For people who prefer Smart Objects and non destructive flow, Russell's adaptation is great.
Regards, Murray

Re: Russel Brown adds to Calvins technique

I didn't know Calvin did this... Will have to think of another technique for the workshop

I think the smart objects works when that's the only thing you're doing AND when you need to see the effect while doing it and might change your mind afterward then you just go to the blur filter and change it.

There are other ways to get detail with some variations - Multiply + shadows/highlights - gives you a very nice effect (desaturating slightly)
Same with Overlay (Low opacity)

Finish up with some curves applied to a HP and you're set!

Great thing for portraits.

Re: Russel Brown adds to Calvins technique

I found another great way to make this technique non destructive and much faster with a live preview.
But its difficult to explain.

I ll make a tutorial about the technique when i am back from the PS world.

Then i will post it with another great techniques on my blog and here (if the thread is still active).

lg Calvin
