Some advise and criticism?

Hi,

I was just wondering if anyone could fire some advise my way to make the ropes that tie up this guy's mouth a little more realistic..
to me it still looks like the ropes are ON the face, instead of going into the skin.. I just can't seem to make it look real..

Comment on the rest of the picture (positive and negative) is of course very welcome, but my main goal was the rope... Something's off, and I'm not seeing it...

Re: Some advise and critisism?

Hi possamai. it doesn't look too bad at the moment, the only way I could think of is some careful artistry needed. The skin around the puncture holes could be pinched in as if tight and drawn from the thread.

Re: Some advise and critisism?

I tried doing that a little with some dodge & burn around the holes, but it got very unnatural in colour.. I might have to give it some more attention.
I'll try finding an example because I really don't know how that looks off the top of my head :-)
thnx

Re: Some advise and critisism?

I pasted a section of string from a white baseball (with red string) on top of his mouth, positioned it over the lips, and changed the Blend Mode from Normal to Darken or Darker Color. Then add a layer mask and paint with black on the mask to blend it in if required (usually is not). To that layer I clipped a Hue/Sat adj layer to change the color of the string and darken. Sample attached.
The other thing you can do if you need the string to appear to follow the 3D flow of lips and chin is to create a Displacement Map of the lip area and apply the string to it.

While you are at making him look creepy, you might try Draganizing him.

Re: Some advise and critisism?

I think his mouth looks too unrestricted,if he drew in his lips he could still talk if you get my meaning.
He needs to have a bit of liquify done on him to tighten his mouth more.
Some of the strings are quite straight and not really looking under any tension, especially the rightmost one.
You could always go and buy some string and try sewing it through things to see what looks right and then emulate it on the picture.
