50% gray layer set to Luminosity, opacity 30%, hide all mask,.... shirt, sky, wall painted white on mask to reveal... lightened somebody in eyeglasses, lightened face in darker areas.... sharpened

... I couldn't agree more ... fact is, trying to darken a solid, pure white block or lighten a solid, pure black block (can be very easily done in different ways) you will only get solid, grey blocks ...

Pure white and pure black = no detail whatsoever.

If you want to see/have some details in such areas of your picture you'll have to either copy/paste them from a 'good' area of the same picture, borrow them from another picture, or paint them on ...

Re: Always the same problems: Xtreme highlights

Adding a little bit of noise can help in areas where it has completely blown out to white.
You can then mask back to just those parts that need it.
It wont help with getting any more detail from it but the printer will pick up the pixels and it wont leave a large white shape to shine out at you.

... Great, quick, fast & easy alternative to minimize the problem! ...

Can you help?
Another way is .. select the blown out areas; selective color/white and play with the sliders until you have a color of choice; paint on a new blank layer in color mode to blend, i.e. the yellow of his headdress, the blue at the bottom corner of his shirt; curves in luminosity mode to lighten, add contrast, etc.

Re: Always the same problems: Xtreme highlights

Small compact camera lacks dynamic range, any high contrast scene and it will be blown high lights or shadows...
The compact ones that have the best dymamic range are Sigma DP2/DP1 and Sony NEX.

BTW, nice work Gary.
