Removing shadow from face?

Hello, I'm relatively new to photoshop(1 1/2 months), and I've been messing around with my son's photo for some time now, trying to remove the shadow, and I can't succeed. Can anyone help me out on what to do, please? Thanks!

Would be easier to do and look better if the photo wasn't already altered, but here you go. You just have to make the selection around the shadow and then lighten it and go from there.

The dark area should be easily selectable with the Quick Select tool, then use Refine Edge to make the selection as accurate as you can. Apply a curve adj layer to brighten it to match the adjacent lighter area. The resulting image will need some color correcting to fix the skin colors which are way off.
