BTW, that keyboard shortcut for loading the red channel as a selection was changed in CS4 or CS5. Not sure what version you are using. CMD+OPT is consistent, but the number assigned to each channel changed.

Go to you channels pallet and you'll see each channel's number on it's right. So it's CMD+OPT+the number of whichever channel you wish to load as a selection.
