Anton Corbjin Look

Can anyone tell me how Anton Corbjin gets such dark and heavy tones in his work? I thought this could be achieved through contrast and curves but seems like he's onto something different. All of his shots have an dark feel to them, brilliant. If you look at the "blue section", I'm assuming he is using duotone. The "color" section is great and heavily saturated in parts, particularly the U2 images, but still has a lot of blacks in it while retaining detail. I hope I'm making sense here, just want some help with figuring out how this is done, I think his work is great. Thanks in advance . . .

Re: Anton Corbjin Look

What the Printer does with Corbjins Pictures is called Lith- Printing This is an analogue technique with a special Positiv Developer...I did it for Years by myself but until now i think it could not be simulated digitally....

I learnd the technique by the Books of Tim Rudman:
http://www.timrudman.com/

this ist a book that shows what can be done :
http://www.amazon.de/Master-Photogra...5012050&sr=8-2

an in this Book he discusses also some digital techniques:

One of the best an famous Darkroom wizards here in Germany is Wolfgang Moersch:

Re: Anton Corbjin Look

As I know the work of Anton Corbjin through Joy Division since let's say 1978 (ouch getting old...) I don't think this has nothing to do with curves. It's obviously an analog process. Pretty the same of the one you can see on the movie "control"
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0421082/ (don't watch if you are a bit down !)

Can't wait for "the american" - to be released soon?

PS: still clever to know how it can be done digitally anyway...

Re: Anton Corbjin Look

I'd say like that:

Darker images, strong contrast, adding grain...

an example of my own:

the layers below:

PS: It's not exactly the same effect but I think it can help.

Re: Anton Corbjin Look

I love one of his video as well : "Headhunter" by Front 242 (Belgian band) The effect is brilliant on this one...

Re: Anton Corbjin Look

I tried similar look here http://luciekout.posterous.com/port-...menitsa-greece

This photo was taken at 9 p.m. and I used Sony A100 (yeah, old crap) and Sigma 24-70mm/f2,8 lens. Time was 1/30s , f6,3 (stabilization used), ISO 100.

smart RAW objects, dodge and burn painting, high pass, selective color, masks, contrast, bit of HDR emulation and after all I simply took only the blue chanel to reach BW moody picture, I added some little grain as well - aprox. 2 hours total time I guess.
