Re: PhotonicTools

new version was just uploaded

<v4 update>
- common libraries packed in SWF (this should FIX the problem with the "error")
- significant improvement in masking the skin

I strongly recommend you test it now
and let me know what you think

Edit: one of the skin-masks is not generating properly... so v4.1 will be coming soon

Re: PhotonicTools

Shadow, v3.1 is working for me now. I did a clean install of the files rather than overwriting the old ones.

Will try 4.1 when available.

I'm curios, the sliders do not include radius, do they provide the full range available from the conventional GB & HP dialog box? I'm assuming so.

I really like the real-time WYSIWYG nature of this, but for getting more predictive with what I'm doing I wish I could keep an eye on my radius as well. Any way to show that in your panel?

Re: PhotonicTools

v 4.1 uploaded
- bad-sub-masking of the skin tones fixed.

The sliders are not directly connected to the HP and the GB.

With the upper slider you pick what type of texture you target, and with the lower how wide the band is.

The values of the sliders are used to calculate the necessary HP/GB, and then they are applied.

the first versions were the 2 sliders controlling directly the hg and the gb, but this way you couldn't move the same band-width and you still had to move one value at a time.

Right now when you move the top slider, both HP and GB move together, keeping the same "distance" in radius (which is defined by the lower slider)

which radius (or maybe difference in hp/gb) is most beneficial for you?

Re: PhotonicTools

This works in PS CS5 on OSX 10.6.4, Flash Player 10.1.52.14

Had to rename the file "SmoothSplit.jsx.txt" to "SmoothSplit.jsx"

Seems very interesting and useful.
You wrote that you can have any number of these smoothband layers. When I do this, and slide the sliders, the values change for all SmoothBand layers. Am I misunderstanding, or is that the way its supposed to work?

Thanks for putting your time into this. Seems pretty cool!

Re: PhotonicTools

when you move the sliders, the change is only of the currently selected layer

so far when you select a new layer, its settings/values are not reflected automatically
but they are not changed until you move the sliders again while the layer is selected
(I'm not sure if I should implement auto-update as it will probably slow down the workflow)...

right now the interface does not refresh automatically when you just select a layer

but... you can still make adjustments, and they are dynamic until you press "rasterize"

cheers

Re: PhotonicTools

Gotcha.
Seems like the functionality is pretty cool.
I think the interface needs small refinements, including showing the correct position of the sliders for the active layer. Another suggestion: maybe 'pore' and 'blotchs' could be change to 'fine' and 'large' or 'small' & 'big' or maybe not. I just know these technique can be used on all kinds of surfaces other than skin

nice work though!

Re: PhotonicTools

I'm, liking it Shadow. Makes it very fast and easy to play and experiment.

I'm curious, what is the basis of the mask? Any possibility to offer mask options in the event one wants to use this on something other than skin?

Also, I'm not a big user of inverted highpass because of the haloing/bleed across edges. I'm more a fan of doing a split at a given radius, and then doing an additional blur to selections of the LF layer. I'm sure that's beyond the scope of this panel, but what about the possibility of another that does a conventional split, then offers additional sharpening/blurring control over each of the High and Low layers?

Just thinking out loud here. But very pleased already.

Re: PhotonicTools

v. 5.1
- Layer is actively renamed with the used hp/gb settings
- bug-fix: re Unmasking Bg_layer

I'm just about at the limitation of the "Scripting".
It may be possible to get some callback updates for the interface, but at this point it requires a lot of effort which is not warranted. (so right now the interface does not refresh on selecting a second SmoothBand layer)

If you move the sliders it will of course change them to the new setting, so if you make secondary corrections keep an eye on the set GB/HP levels seen in the name of the layer, so you know the current settings.

you can see my e-mail by double-clicking on the interface
I am interested if you have suggestions and comments.

Flashtones, the mask is based on skin-tone colours.
you are not tied to it, you can change it/delete it etc.
just keep in mind there are two masks, one on the layer and one inside it (in the smart object).

splitting and blurring the high-frequency layer will result in the exact same halos.
splitting and editing (healing) the high-frequency of course is whole different thing.

I added as you see the HP and the GB radius to be shown in the name of the layer,
so you will have a good glance on where and what corrections you make.

.. hopefully this will give some free options to using Portraiture
