Re: New Topaz plug-in! Sharpening and blur correct

HPF + USM does not equal deconvolution.

Deconvolution is the optimal method known at the moment for reconstructing an image after passing through a low pass filter, the anti-aliasing filter covering your sensor. It is also a method for solving for lens blur. It is an analytical solution to the problem. Your method is a practical sharpening method. Mathematically, they are not even similar.

Over at Lloyd Chamber's site, he does an experiment with a D3x RAW file, and uses deconvolution to find a near-optimal sharpening at the pixel level. The results are stunning and artifact-free, even though the D3x LP filter has a light touch anyway. This is an example in which your method would not be a candidate. I would use your method for aesthetic purposes, and thank you for sharing it.

If the new Topaz tool does deconvolution, this would be useful for a number of things. There aren't that many good implementations of it. Though I hear that CS5 "smart sharpen" does it on some settings.

As I said before,
I can only replicate the results from the examples the company has given, not speculate.

Post the RAW files you can't get comparable sharpening results and we can talk.
(and compare)
