creating a precise selection

Hello,

I need to create a really precise selection of this chandelier. Normally I would silo it with a path, but this object is too complicated. What would be the best method to extract the chandelier and lights from the background? Thanks a lot.http://s161.photobucket.com/albums/t...chandalier.jpg

Re: creating a precise selection

Rather than trying to extract the chandelier to a transparent background, you might obtain better results by blending it into a new background. The method would depend on what the new background was. For example, using the Blend-If sliders in the Layer Style window might be one effective method. Using one of the Layer Blend modes would be another, again depending on the new background content.

Murray, I didn't really explain what I have to do on this image. The chandelier is not going on a new background. There is a sort of halo or glow around it that I need to reduce. I thought I would generate a selection of the chandelier and then invert it to protect the chandelier when cloning away the halo.

Caravaggio, I used the red channel to make a selection of the chandelier.

Re: creating a precise selection

OK, thanks for the clarification. If you select the Burn tool and select Shadows from the Option Bar, make the brush soft and about 30% opacity and paint over the orange haze and in 30 secs its gone. No need to mask or select.

Thank you, Murray, for the tip on using the burn tool. It sure saved me a lot of work. And thanks, Des151, for the info on creating a selection from the red channel.
