Mario Testino editorial - Jan 2011 Vogue UK

Hi,

I have just been looking at Testino's editorial of Keira Knightley in UK Vogue.

Does anyone know how this effect is achieved?

Thanks

Adam

I don't know on what part are you referring to, but if you mean the colors, it looks as if the original image was b&w, then they colorized the whole image.

Another approach could be, by desaturating the skin, then bringing just a little hint back of it's original color.

Thanks Toxic Snake,

yes, it was the colors I was referring to. I initially thought it was selective desaturation (the front cover is a normal color picture of Keira and the eyes in the editorial have lost some of their brownness. The lips are very red so must have been masked). But the face is very white so I thought there might have been an overlay of white applied. My big question is; how did the clothes get this look, it doesn't look colorized to me, there is a lot of subtlety to the color. It also has a certain granularity.

I would use gradient maps on selected areas to get more natural look.

I also think what Toxic Shake said is a good idea too. I would completely remove color and then color the image with gradient maps on selected areas to get the look.

Thanks for this but you have lost me a little. I have used gradient maps to remove color and then reintroduce by painting over the mask with a black brush but I have never used them to selectively color different parts of an image. Could you give some more details please?

Of course.

I should have been more specific. I'll try to explain. I would use one gradient map with mask for belt, another gradient map with mask for background area, one more for skin and so on until I color the whole image. Just use different gradient map adjustments with masks for different areas. Hope it helps.

I see a lot of talk about gradient maps.

Never understood how to apply/control them as in this instance, any tips or tuts to point us in the right direction
