Shadows on composite images...

Hi . i kind of like Joel Grimes composite images shot with the three light setup and i got his dvd. One thing he dosent say anything about is how he does the shadows on the composite background/ground on full body composite - around the feets. I can see he has some shadow on some of his images in his portfolio. I guess they are made with a blured black soft brush but what are the thoughts behind these shadows - is it that the sun is comming from right above or...?? and how is shape determined?

Link to an image, its easier to know the exact look and lighting conditons then.

A blurred soft brush would be used for a cloudy day, not with the sun ( hard shadows ).

Just thinking out loud...I'd probably paint it on a separate layer, then use a displacement map to make the shadow look right on the ground...
