Thank you very much for all the posts. I guess it depends on how much you know about the intended use and printing conditions, as well as who will talk to the printing company. Thanks again for all the comments, they are very helpful.

Exactly! Then when they get what they don’t want (a bad contract proof, or worse press sheets), they get a little upset.

If it is going on press I only send flat CMYK, if I am comfortable with the printer I will sometimes send a flat TIFF along with layered CMYK (in case there are edits they can possibly handle). If it is something that might be a display graphic printed on a large format inkjet I will ask the printer (billboard, static cling, large info graphic display, bus wrap... ). Typically a majority of the campaign will be going on press so I am already working in CMYK by the end of the job, then there is no need to flip back to RGB.

Basically, only if the project is just going to be printed without going on a press.
