Just can't get skin smoothing right... help?

I've been trying to learn skin smoothing and this is my latest attempt, but I'm not particularly satisfied with the job I did. After reading the other thread about "Photoshop Don'ts" I feel like this image looks like their example of bad skin smoothing (blurry vs. correctly retouched).

This is just one photoshop deal I just can't get. I've read tips, watched tutorials, experimented... but nothing seems *right*.

Someone from a photography forum I frequent recommended this forum to me... and I'm hoping that maybe you all here will possibly have some insight that might be lacking on that forum since this forum is specifically geared toward retouching.

What do you think? Actually... I don't think I'm really asking what you *think* (because I know it's bad), so much as, do you have any tips? Can you recommend any good tutorials? Can you recommend any good resources, period?

People from the photography forum keep pointing me towards a program called "Portrait Professional", but I really want to just learn to do it myself. I like to have as much control over my image as possible... and I also don't want to be fighting a computer program just to keep the original shape of the face. -.-

Anyway...

Original:

(This is completely untouched... just imported to Lightroom2... with the Lightroom2 default settings... so I guess it's not *completely* untouched... but it's untouched by *me* )

My monitor is also in desperate need of calibration... but overlooking that... can any of you help me and/or at least point me in the right direction?

Thanks!!

Ps. I don't know how much it will limit me, but I use PSE8 for all this fun stuff.....

Here's a decent vid on 'skin smoothing' and frequency separation. Whatever you do, don't start calling gaussian blur "goggian" blur like she does.

I don't use this particular technique in its entirety for my retouches (I omit the surface blur part and instead use dodging and burning), but this will get you a much better result than your latest attempt, above, and will set you on the right path.

SterlingH, I just watched the video. Thanks for that, I'm going to have to try it out!

Does anyone else have any additional recommendations?

Many people look down on the degrunge technique but i think it often works just fine on pictures like yours.

Try HERE

It works well on all photos but better on some then others. Some believe the results are too regular and harsh... But I've found it a good foundation that can be adjusted and masked as needed.

Regular techniques can be added to compliment the procedure.

Even better HERE is cspringer's skin repair action. It uses the degrunge as a base...I use it when i want a quick skin repair.
