Hello Everyone What's wrong with this picture?

I have been lurking for some time and I have been amazed by the talent on this forum.

I thought I would go ahead and raise my hand with a question.

I tried to give this interior photo some kind of life using shadows and highlights applied multiple times.

While it's improved, something got lost along the way. I don't know quite what though. Is it over processed?Too contrasty? Not neutral enough? I'd like a nice vibrant look with out looking phony or obvious. Please have a look.

Thank You.

This is the original without any work :

I think you have managed to make it feel much warmer and crisp. The before image is very bright. The shadows under the chairs and being able to see through the windows gives it great depth of space.

nice job!

I think something is wrong with the perspective. The room looks very "bulgy" and the ceiling kind of skewed.

Re: Hello Everyone What's wrong with this picture?

Hi Julius: I think you did a good job, but what bothers me as soon as I took a first look at the picture, is that the white (light) and "green" on the windows, are too bright. Maybe if you darken the whites and desaturate the greens a bit it'll have a more balanced work. But that's just my perception on the photo.

PS The lower part of the right window, (the green stuff) looks like a different photo, it looks kinda weird.

Looks very nice, what stands out to me is how bright the table and chairs closest to the camera are. The room has a nice natural feel to it, but the lighting on that part of the photo feels unnatural and fake. Maybe try to bring that part down a bit?

Re: Hello Everyone What's wrong with this picture?

My thoughts: (all measurements done by eye)

On the right side the door edge is not parallel to the edge of the photo, also the door looks abnormally wide to me.

On the left side, the corner of the wall between the two window frames is not parallel to the window frames.

The medallion (I think thats what they call them) where the hanging light comes from does not appear to be in the same plane as the wall/ceiling line.

I think what bothers me is that your front fill light slightly overwhelms the natural light as others have mentioned....... the table and chairs are too well lit....... bring that light level down a bit and make the overall light a little more natural and balanced and also the direction your front light is coming from should probably be coming from more of an angle.... it looks like it's coming from the camera position.

it looked a little too bright to me, so I tweaked it a little just to see if it would make a difference

Yes well that's more dramatic but that look would never fly with my real estate customers . They like light and open. And yes , the lighting is on camera flash so the things in the foreground are always going the brightest. A lot of what I do has to shot in a hurry but if i can make them look great with photoshop after the fact I'll really have something in terms of a saleable product.
