Hair today, gone tomorrow!

Here's a nice one just landed on my desk. I have to change the blue shirt to chestnut brown whilst maintaining the hair colour/detail. The colour mod is easy but the semi transparent hair is a pain. Any ideas for a quick fix. Cut 'n pastin' strands of hair is my fall back position but I deliver tomorrow.....

I'd get it as close as you can on a channel mask then draw the hair back in over the top.
If you want to send it me I'll take a look, www.garethpritchard.co.uk

Re: Hair today, gone tomorrow!

Just need a decent hair mask and it should be easy enough since the background color is far from the hair color... Fast quick hair Masking is one of the reasons I got topaz remask...

Re: Hair today, gone tomorrow!

Interesting vid Julian - the auto masking is phenomenal but in the example used he just had to maintain a mono colour friz for hair. I think most of us would have got good results from the original. When the hilites drop in and out of the background tone the problem is trickier. I was fiddling with the channels approach today Gareth before losing patience!
I was looking for a quick fix because that image sneaked in with a load of easier stuff and I under quoted. Thank you for your kind offer but I'll just 'wing it'. Very nice work on your website btw and a smart logo too.

Re: Hair today, gone tomorrow!

The key is more than one way to skin a cat i use topaz remask in conjunction with refine mask and channels at times...

Re: Hair today, gone tomorrow!

Russellbown demo's the tool nicely but doesn't tackle the nitty gritty stuff - ie the finessing. We can all do what he does already (I'm using CS3) but not quite so fast! 90% of my work goes in to about 5% of the detail and pixel level retouching is my stock in trade. That said, I'm going to check out the Topaz solution you have recommended; anything that saves a few hours will be most welcome. Many thanks for the links Julian.

One of the reasons I upgraded to cs5 is the new refine masking edges feature is most excellent..
