Is there a hotkey?

Hello all you wise and mighty people!

Can any of you tell me if there is a shortcut to show the original image before I started editing it? In other words: How can I quickly go all the way back to the beginning in my history?

Of course I could always just keep my background layer untouched but I don't always remember to duplicate that layer...

Best wishes to you all
Bo

You can always duplicate the layer when you begin a file. Then when you want to see the original, just click on the duplicate image's tab and there it is. You can have the window view set to tile and see them both side by side then. Just click on consolidate to tabs in the windows menu to put one behind the other again.

Re: Is there a hotkey?

I have no idea if there is such a shortcut but I see it could be handy. It may be possible to record as an action then save as a hotkey - not tried it as I think that it may be just too much trouble even if possible.

spotters way is pretty good IMO with the advantage that you can quickly tab from one to the other or view side by side.
The way I currently tend to work is to dup the background layer and then turn it off I then add my layers above the original background leaving the dup on top. When I need to I just click to reveal top/dup layer for a quick comparison.

DjBeau, the quickest way which I have found is to go to the history panel and click on the first row which suppose to be the first opened image. if you want to go back just click on the last row. You can change the amount of history rows (steps) in your preferences but the first row should be always the basic image.

Yeah, but that's a mouse action... I'm trying to find a hotkey :-)

Try f12 to revert the image, then ctrl-z to undo the revert.

Re: Is there a hotkey?

If you have not rolled over the History Panel (i.e. exceeded the max number of history states), you can hit Crtl+Alt+Z to step back the history states one step at a time. However, it may take you much longer to enter that key sequence 5 or 10 times than it would take you to mouse up to the History panel. Keeping a separate window with a duplicate of the orig image, as noted above, is an efficient way to view or resort to the original by just hitting the tab key.

Yes, this is a potentially good solution but should carry a caution. F12 reverts the image to the last saved version. So if you have been working on the image for an hour and like most people who are concerned with potential loss of hard work, have hit the Ctrl Save at least once, you will revert to that saved image which depending on state and file type, may not get you back to the origianl image you started with.

Re: Is there a hotkey?

You can group all the layers you create for retouching and keep the original layer outside the group. So, if you want to see the original you just clic on "the eye" to hide the group, so you'll see the original.
