Blurring with clone stamp tool

Since working with the clone stamp tool at less than 100% opacity is blurring, I am wondering if cloning with the clone stamp tool at full opacity, but with a low flow is also a form of blurring? Is this a bad practice? I sometimes do this to smooth out transitions in wrinkled clothes when the transitions are too extreme for dodging and burning.

Re: Blurring with clone stamp tool

When working with any of the brush tools, opacity is the density of the marks made by the brush, flow is their frequency. If your brush has a soft edge, they will look very much like the same thing. Try it with a large, hard-edged brush and you'll see the difference.

I wouldn't call cloning at a low opacity blurring, it's technically blending. I can see it working quite well on untextured fabrics, but would expect it not to work well with anything highly textured. As far as it being an acceptable practice, my rule of thumb is: can you see where the technique has been used in the image when it's done.

Cheers,
Michael
