How to create a credible fake background?

I took this picture from this ceramic piece. I don't like the background (as you can see, my photographic equipement is very poor!) so I want to change it for a neutral background. But it looks fake...

How can I create a fake background that looks credible?

Perhaps the background is to even, try giving it a lighter to darker gradient?

Re: How to create a credible fake background?

Thanks! It's getting better!

I used a gradient as you said, and I added a little bit of noise... I don't think you can see it in the small file.

Is the shadow believable? How can I improve it?

Is it a decent image for the ceramic artist's portfolio?

Thanks again!

I agree with Mike.
Also try a subtle texture on a 50% gray layer and give it lots of perspective (to match)

yes, looking better!

Also the texture I was mentioning you could use the filter emboss before the perspective transform to add depth.

Re: How to create a credible fake background?

Could you explain that about the 50% gray layer and the texture?

Re: How to create a credible fake background?

here is a screencast that shows the ideas (but needs much tweaking)

http://www.screencast.com/t/cyVr0MdHj

put the texture below the ceramic piece.

Hope this helps

A grounding front shadow and a casting shadow might help some also..
