Mask layer Help - strange happenings

i am experiencing some strange happenings when i am joing 2 photos together and using the layer mask to add / erase on the join

i have 3 desktops with cs3 and the other 2 work in the usual way but my workstation just started to play up - i have been doing this for 4 years so i know something is up on my one.

Enclosed is a quick snapshot of the 2 images being joined
Usually when i join then i add a layer mask and brush with white and black - taking away some bits or adding to get the join looking good

now when i paint on the mask on photo 1 it also adds/covers areas on photo 2 - which it does not do on the other machines or mine until today
meaning that now i then need to clean up the additional paint on the second photo and thus doing it twice longer

you can see on the snapshot -
i have checked preferences and opacity/ hardness/flow with the other desktops and all appears to be the same -

any ideas why this is happening - or how to turn it off

sorry i know its a bit hard to really explain whats happening but will try and answer any questions in more detail

Re: Mask layer Help - strange happenings

ilegales, occasionally Photoshop's preferences file gets corrupted, especially if your PC gets shut down in an irregular manner. When that happens all you need to do is hold down the Alt+Ctrl+Shift keys while starting up PS. You will get a dialog box asking you if you want to reset the prefs. It is very rare that you ever need to uninstall and reinstall PS.
Regards, Murray
