Re: Demystification of Mert & Marcus

Good information here guys...I've taken some suggestions and applied them, especially the localized color and tonal adjustments. I've included a link to a before / after photo that I shot last night, and edited today (and no, it's not a real Vogue cover obviously, but thought I would throw in a disclaimer for those of you who are on their 4th beer).

Re: Demystification of Mert & Marcus

That's pretty cool. The use of the fake vogue graphic is a bit tacky even if you were attempting to emulate that.

I think that photo itself has better potential than the photoshop work is giving it though

Was it unfinished/quickly done? You've posted much more refined work in that regard before.

Hey Kav

Thanks for the reply / critique. Yes, the 'Vogue' graphic was an afterthought, obviously just a tongue in cheek kind of addition.

At the risk of turning this thread into a discussion about one of my own photographs, perhaps you could briefly explain (either via thread or PM) what you would have augmented. Other work I have posted on this forum have been beauty shots...Requiring another level of retouching altogether.

Re: Demystification of Mert & Marcus

Exhuming my thread for Halloween (ok one day later)... Thought this little old easy-to-find article might be of interest to readers...Also, maybe someone might have some new information? (Mert and Marcus, if you're Googling yourselves and stumble on this thread, please feel free to jump in the conversation or hire me - even as a studio bitch - while you're at it).

Hi guys,

I know this campaign is kinda old but I would like to hear you on it because the raw pictures were leaked. Of course it heavely post processed, but what more can you tell me about it.

Re: Demystification of Mert & Marcus

IMO, this was one of the most head-ache inducing mis-uses of Photoshop in a major fashion campaign I've seen in a while...That aside:

If you google solarization, you may get some fundamentals into this technique even from a film perspective - otherwise this effect can be achieved with a combo of selective color, gradient maps, etc...

There are discussions about this campaign in other places places on this forum - search for it.

As long as this thread is revived, more info about M&M please - I'm still a sponge for any information I can get.

I'm not in the industry yet but I have to agree with the guy who actually worked for them. First off..their concepts and aesthetic alone are very creative and smart.

Secondly, they're known in a way for really incorporating retouching as we know it today into the fashion world, so they've been doing it a long time.

Re: Demystification of Mert & Marcus

Resurrecting this thread yet again to share a bit of non-retouching knowledge with y'all based on a photo I submitted to Ted over at www.guessthelighting.com

For those who aren't familiar with this blog, Ted attempts to deconstruct lighting for certain fashion, commercial, and portrait photographs and shares his findings (hypothesis's) with the rest of us. Recently, he used one of my suggested Mer & Marcus photos of Adele in Vogue.
