Surely the circular green light patterns would be the same ( as the direction of the movement would not have any impact on the effect ).
Yeah, sorry about using an ambiguous term, I'm talking about the falloff of the strobe itself, not the falloff pattern of the lighting... in long exposures, front curtain sync the camera captures the entire strobe duration, whereas rear curtain usually closes the shutter before the strobe reaches zero output.

This is because strobes don't turn on and then turn off, they burst energy through a gas (usually xenon) which causes an initial burst of light and then a falloff period as the excited gas particles return to their inert state. Depending on the power rating and setting on the strobe, this can last as much as 4 or 5 times the length of the advertised "flash duration" on a strobe.

In a shot like this, where the photographer is shooting hand held with what appears to be a long lens in order to get the movement, if he/she were using front curtain sync, there would be a noticeable trail as the camera captured the falloff from the strobe.

The shadow side of the shot would be the same with either method, but the light side would differ.

Cheers,
Michael

Re: amazing effect!!how to achieve it? anyone know

Hi,

Regarding Michael's observation of rear-curtain vs. front-curtain sync, the practical difference for an image is:
  • With front-curtain sync the flash goes off right when the front curtain of the shutter opens and captures a clear image. Then the blurred motion happens as the shutter stays open for a long time, partially or completely overlaying and wiping out that clear image.
  • With rear-curtain sync the blurred motion happens first, then the flash goes off right when the rear curtain of the shutter is about to close. That overlays a clear image over the blurred-motion image and gives the image a sharp, clear overlay.
