How to Achieve This Type of Effect

I have searched online for a while and have never been able to find a tutorial or anything on how to achieve this type of effect can anyone give me some input on this?

Are u refering to that grunge style?
Get a texture, put it on the upper layer and use some blanding modes as Multiply, Overlay and so on.

Let us know if it's what are u looking for.

it's usually called sandwiching.

Uwe Steinmueller did a webinar here at RetouchPro where the technique was called texture blending. Some more info

@Isedo Thanks not so much applying the texture with blend mode its how the faces are almost like a painting I'm curious as to what that technique is I did try to add texture and set blending mode to different settings but did not achieve the painting look like in these images.

@Nasturtium Thank You I will give it a go and let you know if I can achieve what I'm looking to do.

For some reason I keep thinking it has something to do which threshold or dodge and burn but I am not to familiar with working with threshold.

Managed to come close but Im still curious how to achieve more then one color in the face and hair maybe is because my image of the person was black and white and not color will further experiment.

I did not use Uwe Steinmueller's script as it is only for cs3 and cs4 I have cs5.
