Selective Sharpening

I've scanned some old black and white negs whose definition, though OK at the centre of the image falls off towards the edges. These were presumably taken at low f-number exposures. Obviously the photos need a gradually increasing sharpening towards the edges, but how do this?

Re: Selective Sharpening

With a gradient mask. Here’s the basic idea: http://www.digitaldog.net/files/USM_tutorial.pdf

Re: Selective Sharpening

one way to try..
combined all on new layer ( Shft+Ctrl+Alt+E )
copy ( Ctrl+J )
Sharpen whole image till desired effect is obtained in the areas desired
apply mask
select Gradient tool, use Radial Gradient (black as foreground and white as background colors)... start at center of picture drag to corner.. adjust using a soft white to show, or black to hide sharpness... adjust opacity if necessary
