What Type Of Computer Do You Use??

What do most retouchers use?? Is your primary machine a laptop with a small or large screen, a desktop with a large screen, or multiple monitors??

What do you prefer??

Re: What Type Of Computer Do You Use??

Hi I am a bit of the gadget boy so gladly share some info.
I only have average monitor 24" HP LP2475W.I know others have way bigger then that and even more then one. PC I have built my self from the scratch.intel i7 920. 6GB RAM tipple channel. I would prefer 9RAM for 100 layer work. Haven't said that it is really fast and smooth experience.

Hey Neb, I'm jealous; what are you retouching that needs a 100 layers!
Once I get to about 10 layers, I save as a stage, flatten the 'nailed down' elements and continue afresh. Heck, I can even lose the layers panel on the desktop!

Hi Rep,

Figurative language. I still able to hit 50-70 layers. Lots of targeted adjustments. I tend to stretch it though.

No, most files I do are massive comps, so when you start out with about 10-70 base images to work with, when you start adding adjustments etc... I find that files bigger than about 11Gigs, that's when my machine starts disagreeing.

Is it a single composite image out of 10-70?

Re: What Type Of Computer Do You Use??

LOL. Nothing wrong with that Fuzz; it focuses the mind! I used to retouch stuff 'destructively' which keeps the file sizes down. Hardly necessary these days but old habits die hard.

Re: What Type Of Computer Do You Use??

I've got a quad core Yorkfield ( generation before i7 ).

8 GB RAM, 2X2TB HDD in RAID 1, NVidia video card ( no idea which one off-hand ) Windows 7 64 bit.

No speed problems with CS5 at all with what I'm doing, well, saving a large 1 GB file as PSD takes 15-20 seconds due to the compression.

27" NEC Spectraview monitor, which I LOVE!

Maybe it is not the best power saver in the world. Quality is stunning, value for money. I did quiet a few weeks of research before I bought. At that time it was the best you could get within 400 GBP range for 24" along with the Dell one. Stand is very steady and easy to adjust, you can get monitor vertical or horizontal. You have Display port, HDMi and DVI (I believe). No internal speakers you need external. The other good thing is matt screen so reflections don't bother me at all. Pretty much it.

I will keep an eye for it. although I see there is a newer model,
HP ZR24w and there is also a 22 inch model.

I am on the lookout for one, so this is my weeks of research prior to decision!
