Color Theory Books?

Hey all,

I was wondering if anyone has any recommendations for books relating to general color theory? It's an area I don't have any "formal" training in so I'm looking to improve.

thanks!

Some info on the web you can read through -

http://www.worth1000.com/tutorials/161595/color-theory

http://www.webexhibits.org/colorart/index.html

Goethe's "Theory of Colors" is a great book -

http://www.amazon.com/Theory-Colours.../dp/0262570211

"Serial Photography" by Harald Mante has a section about colour theory that is brief but good, there's plenty of other info around on the web too.

Re: Color Theory Books?

www.123di.com has the 123di DVD. It's very good, very well organized and very comprehensive. It's the resource that really helped me put together all the bits and pieces I'd read and heard about color theory into a coherent, organized big picture. It's been a foundation that's served me well every time I read or hear something else on the topic.

Thanks for the kind comments! Next to a chosen luminosity for a photo colour is the most important thing so it pays to study up and understand it, both in photographing and post work, goodluck.

Re: Color Theory Books?

Thought i would report back to this thread in case anyone else out there was looking for more info on color theory either now or in future searches etc. I came across a few good basic tutorials online as well as one really cool free online based "color scheme picker" for making sets of colors.
1)http://www.colourlovers.com/copaso
2)http://www.colorschemedesigner.com(this one doesn't always load it seems..but is awesome when it does work.)

I figured i would share what i found for basic tutorials too:

These two are from a page for a software app but offer good basic theory regardless of whether u plan to buy the software:

http://www.color-wheel-pro.com/color-theory-basics.html
http://www.color-wheel-pro.com/color-schemes.html

Same goes for this one:
http://www.tigercolor.com/color-lab/...tm#Color_Wheel

Hope this helps anyone else out there looking for some free knowledge about color theory.

nick

Re: Color Theory Books?

Good to see and thanks for reporting back with your findings, there so much to learn about colour and how the human eye perceives it.

Another good online colour scheme creator is Adobe's Kuler which lets you create and share colour schemes, its also quite good just browsing the community for ones you like too. Click on "Create" on the lower left side to start creating your own. Also if you have an iPhone there's Saturation which uses the Adobe Kuler colour schemer and community, very handy for creating or confirming colour out in the field.
