Background removal

Hey guys,

We are a small kids/portrait photography startup in Brisbane.

As such, we are still getting many of our processes figured out. In addition to that we are still figuring the smoothest Photoshop workflow.

Basically, all our images are shot against a white or black backdrop. We are currently just painting in white/black to even out and neutralize any color differences and remove lights.

Any automated processes you guys know of to do this? Perhaps a Photoshop action or plugin? We are aware of better lighting setups. However, our space limits this...

I am attaching a sample of what we have to work with! Faces deliberately blured.

Re: Background removal

Hi kids photograph
It would be helpful if you showed both a before and after of exactly what you are looking for. IMHO you are money ahead to have the setup and shot such that the time and energy in Photoshop is minimized to begin with. There are ways to automate Photoshop to some extent yet going to Photoshop especially for portrait means manual intervention and time. That Photoshop time will either increase your prices or reduce your profits. Reading between the lines I am guessing you are not going for the high end touched up photograph approach yet that is an assumption.

With examples I am sure you could get some specific answers. I am just suggesting you examine your business model as well.

Thanks for your honesty! I am essentially fielding this discussion for the owners... What you said is basically what I have advised them on!

Attached is a final of what we want.

Re: Background removal

Just a simple/fast quick fix for background

copy BG layer
get gradient samples from white BG on original
new layer between the copy and original BG
put a radial gradient a new layer 1
rough and blurred mask on Background Copy
lighten or darken gradient layer 1 to match
Copy all to new layer 2

fix the rest as needed

Re: Background removal

You could suggest to the owners that they buy a Lastolite Hilite or similar. You put the strobes between the layers of fabric and bang! instant white background without the need for PS. A large softbox at the front to light the subjects and you are sorted.

And no, I am not on commission
