Re: Fine Sharpening

Thanks for all answers. I also use frequency separation but I wanted to compare with others.

Re: Fine Sharpening

Another thought, Shadows/Highlights or HDR Toning can produce some similar effects as well.

Re: Fine Sharpening

Also, check out the Photoshop hidden Gems stuff. There's a thing on the sharpening brush tool. Which I knew existed, but I also knew it was horrible. They've updated it quite a bit in CS5, so now it's supposed to be quite good. Be Sure to turn on the preserve details option (or whatever it's called) in the toolbar and it's really quite good for local sharpening.

Re: Fine Sharpening

I'd say Tony W nailed it pretty well above, creative sharpening throughout the edit using various different contrast sharpening techniques. Obviously a lovely capture straight out of camera but then with the use of D&B to enhance the image. I'm only seeing fine details that have been sharpened in certain areas and this was probly done towards the end of the edit and masked in.

There was a good post over at MM a while back where Pellepiano edited an image I shot with similar lighting -

In the next post down from that you can download a .psd showing the layers used to build the D&B and sharpening.

Re: Fine Sharpening

My sharpening workflow follows Tony's layout. Incidentally, the capture sharpening allows for a better feel of what's needed in terms of everything you do during processing.
