Need help w/a digital vintage photo...

This was in my grandfather's slides. My aunt converted all of the slides into digital format. I think the original was a photo that my late grandfather converted to slide format but I do not have the original. Just was wondering how I can improve this photo? Any ideas/suggestions/etc. I have Corel Paint Shop Pro X2 and do not know how to use the layers yet or do I not use layers with this. I tried messing around w/it but am not satisfied w/outcomes. Thanks in advance.
(NOTE: Due to limited file size on this forum, I can't upload directly from my pc but I do have it on a Facebook page...link is below)

If anyone has any problems viewing it, please let me know and I'll upload it on my photobucket account. Thanks.

Re: Need help w/a digital vintage photo...

Sadly with not having the original you are limited by the quality of this digital capture.

I do not use PSP so cannot give any specific suggestions but more generalised ones.
  • I used the Green channel only as the other 2 did not show any useful information. In this case used Channel mixer monochrome 100% Green, 0 Red and Blue
  • The colour tone of the image I find rather unpleasant and would suggest that this be either converted to B&W or a more realistic Sepia colour be applied.
  • The image suffers from artefacting which may be due to reduction to fit within forum rules. If not you could try and soften/blur the image overall and mask to reveal eyes and other facial features.
  • General clean up to get rid of spots and blemishes
  • I also lightened the shadow side of the face with D&B
  • Could do with a little more work on the face to clean up and a touch more density/contrast to the jacket in particular

Thank you! I like the way you did that. I didn't like the color on the photo much either. What does "mask" mean and what does "D&B" mean please? Thanks again.
P.S. If anyone has any other ideas/suggestions/etc. please feel free...

Sorry about the abreviation D&B means Dodge (to lighten) and Burn (to darken).
Couple of links that may help you:

Here: I used Histogram Maps. I like the way it came out so far. It can probably be better but I have no idea what else to do w/it at this point. Thanks again for the info.
