Glowing texture of skin, defined pores...

Hiya,

I'm learning retouching and need help with one little thing...

how do you get this effect:

http://img23.imageshack.us/img23/2474/ep104c.jpg.

The skin glows in between the pores and the pores are defined but perfect.

I use the clone stamp and healing brush but although this makes the skin smooth and clear, the skin's texture is sometimes not as visible and defined as I want it to be.

This is my work at the moment:

It needs a few twinges and I'd really appreciate any tips you could give me.

I'm a model and not a retoucher by trade.

Hi Liz

You're retouching looks great. My only advice would be to not go too far, unless of course you're after a particular look
Are you trying to get the pores to stand out more in the sample you posted? Looking at it closely the pores in your 'before' pic aren't clear and retouching can't bring out what doesn't exist in the original. You can either add noise (carefully) or use a texture brush to create 'pores', again this needs to be done carefully...
If it's another image you want to see the pores on, can you post it so we can see what you're after?

Mike

Dont paint in pores. Just make sure theyre there when you shoot and you can accentuate them later. Hard to tell from your original but you might be able to bring them out a bit with some careful sharpening... Perhaps a high pass masked just to where you need it.

Watch some of the webinars from Amy Dresser. What you want is typical of her style. You will learn a lot from the two hour classes offered here at RTP.

Re: Glowing texture of skin, defined pores...

Your example looks a lot like a frequency separation (or band stop) to help smooth the skin, while keeping the pores on a separate layer.

Anyway, in your image, you will have to apply sharpening to make the pores more visible (assuming they are actually there in the high resolution image). Make sure you do the sharpening on a separate layer so that you can mask and blend it to better control the effect.

There are many ways to sharpen; high pass was suggested, but you can also do this using filters like Unsharp Mask and Smart Sharpen, or with the high frequency layer from a frequency split. Do it the way that suits you, there are only minor differences between the methods.

I agree with the other posters. This image does not have the texture you are looking for in the original photo. Also, cloning and healing shouldn't take away texture unless you are cloning from a smooth area of the skin so that wasn't the problem here.

An example of removing blemishes while keeping textured skin.
