Re: I'm stuck with skintones

Hi everyone.

I’m just starting out and a little overwhelmed with everything there is to know about retouching.

Last night I started learning about color balance and here’s a few of my attempts. I used Kav’s example.

Note: I’m very new at retouching and I use an un-calibrated Dell U2311H monitor.

-- First image is the original.
-- Second is my attempt using a curves layer (cmyK). I used the eye dropper and sampled near the highlight on the models chin. I tried keeping the cyan value 1/3 of the magenta and yellow values, as taught by Chris Orwig on Lynda. I also used a hue / saturation layer.
-- Third image is the same as the second, except I tried to remove some of the yellow via hue / saturation.
-- Fourth image is Kav’s example which I used as a reference to what I was trying to accomplish.

All I did was “try” to color correct with my un-calibrated monitor and untrained eyes. No other edits were made. Any C&C?

Re: I'm stuck with skintones

I don't think you can really make a blanket statement that all plugins are bad and should never be used. Well, you can make the statement, but I'm not buying it. It all depends on how, and when, and why they're used. There are good plugins and bad plugins. Just because it's not built into Photoshop doesn't automatically make it bad. I use a number of plugins regularly, some of them do single tasks better and sometimes faster than Photoshop. I often will duplicate a plugin-processed layer and change the blend modes (luminance, color, etc.) and use masking and transparency to apply. It makes my life much easier without making any compromise in quality. I wouldn't do it otherwise.

I really want to believe that, except everyone who defends these plugins cant produce one image that looks as if a plug-in was not used. Make me a believer.

Let me get my magnifying glass and I shall say

Whatever floats your boat, retouchers tend to be a little more snobby, photographers not so much. I'm a snob in the main, but use NIK Color Efex and a select few, I just don't use a plugin that smooths the skin, instead I do pretty much the same but with more control by using a bandpass in PS (sometimes and subtly).

Re: I'm stuck with skintones

I do. By the way, that was a trick question The only plugin was a noise reducer which you wouldn't have been able to tell anyway from the small size. Just one of several plugins that can't be detected if used sparingly and properly. My website (the photo I attached was from the Elvis Week gallery) -
