Photoshop issue

Hi All,

*Not sure where to post this, although the problem occurred whilst I was retouching..*

Have a look at the attached screenshots. A mysterious pattern pasted itself into all of the masks in the current group of layers and those above. It also appeared in some of the layers themselves. It's happened once before, a few months ago and I couldn't figure it out.

In case this matters, or I've discovered a shortcut that I didn't realize existed, I was filling a shadow area using the shortcut Shift+F5, I think I'd got as far as hitting enter to fill with black. Then this!

I haven't reinstalled PS yet. I'm working on a 27" iMac, OSX 10.7, 8gb RAM, PS 5.5. I can upload a lo-res of the file if needs be.

Any thoughts?

Re: Photoshop issue

Check your settings - looks like you've got the fill setting set to pattern instead of black.

Re: Photoshop issue

Hi Lurch,

Thanks for the reply. I initially figured the same thing - that the fill had changed to pattern. But I couldn't recreate this using pattern fill and I don't have a pattern that matches this. Also, I had a small selection active at the time and certainly only had one mask selected - cant figure out how so many masks got filled with one click.

Re: Photoshop issue

looks kinda interesting imho... but it's weird indeed.
The outercast layer doesnt have the pattern, looks like it started with the grounding layer, there is the pattern visible in image and mask

Re: Photoshop issue

I had something similar happen to me once (once in 15 years of Photoshop...). Perhaps this is the same?

A file I had with several layers and masks somehow got corrupted while I was working on it. What looked like a copy of a layer in my image (or perhaps a channel) had been applied to (all?) my masks... I don't remember any more details, but there was really no way to undo the damage.

Re: Photoshop issue

@capice: yes, interesting, weird and infuriating!

@chain: that sounds more or less exactly what I experienced. So it's a corrupt file 😡. Actually that makes a lot of sense as I could ctrl-z back a step and get rid of the problem but doing anything else including a save brought the problem back. Actually, didn't try a 'save as', perhaps that could have worked? I managed to fix up the masks this time but it was a small document. Imagine trying to fix 100+ layers 😱!

Will report back if there's any more instances of this. Thanks all.
