Re: Color Grading..Sample Image...Let's see!!

that's interesting, but how would you use that...?
making a mask? (it looks like it will produce hard edges?)

Robert,
re:color/white balancing by numbers
- when shooting make one shot with a grey card for the given light conditions
- using color sampler tool select the grey levels (so you can track them)
- make a curves layer,
and adjust the curves so the sampled grey areas show equal values for r,g,b
... but there must be some video-tutorials for this.

when I mentioned I do it with numbers, I meant something more like..
say a b grading in Lab: deleted

Re: Color Grading..Sample Image...Let's see!!

ShadowLight, you mean the method I posted?
It's used to find areas of near neutrality when you don't have any other clues in your image, not for masking (which would indeed produce undesirable hard edges). So it's just sort of an "update" to a method that's been around and accepted for quite a while now :-).

Your way looks pretty interesting too though, unfortunately I'm not sure I'm getting all the variables right, because if let's say $c_a is the a channel of the image, $c_b is the b channel and $c_l is the Lightness channel, I don't know what $lum should stand for? Is it really the luminosity of the image as the name suggests?

yes, I guess I was wondering how finding those areas can be useful

re: the function, I just pulled it off the script to show what I meant when I said "I do it with numbers". To be honest I have to look at the whole script to see the vars in this particular case. If I'm not mistaken I probably took it out of the "summer" or "summer+" look. ($lum is probably the luminosity in % 0-1) http://illuminations.herokuapp.com/

My stab at it.

Here's my take. Added the Vogue for more of a magazine feel.

Throwing in the .psd:
