done High Key in 5 min action
PSCS 5, 5.5 & 6 will not Share all the steps in this action.
If you record the action on your system it saves and works without screwing things up.
I used PSCS5 and I’m not sure when the B&W Adj Layer was added to PSCS.
So I can’t tell you what PS versions this action will work with.
because this action is to work with a lot of images. Other parts of the
image can be adjusted after you reach High Key.
You can Select parts of the original image and use an Adjustment Layer
to edit parts within the image.
Open an image
A. Open a Gradient Map Layer. mode to Color (see image 1)
There are 3 gradients I've been playing with.
Make sure you Check the Reverse Box.
(in your action you can make 2 or 3 Red to White Gradient
Maps and then Turn off two you don't want to start with.)
Hint – the Red/Pink to White gradient is used for Lighter colored people.
-- the Red to White gradient is used for Darker colored people.
1. Check/Uncheck Reverse Box. It depends on the colors in
the starting image.
2. Adjustment needed will be the Opacity. Watch for changing
of colors. Depending on what colors you start with. When you
adjust to much colors change from whites to blacks.
B. Next is a New Layer>Fill with White. Opacity set to 10-15%
Hint – for Lighter colored people this needs no Opacity Adjustment until the end.
-- for Darker colored people this layer needs to be shut off.
C. Next a Brightness/Contrast Adjustment Layer. Set Contrast to 35.
Hint – Contrast helps in getting darker darks and lighter whites.
But you’ll find other Layers will help in that area.
-- for Lighter colored people this needs a little More or Less Contrast.
watch for: 1. blond hair fading out. 2. face edges fading out.
-- for Darker colored people Contrast needs to be under 0.
D. Next a Curves Adjustment Layer>mode Screen> no Adjustments.
Hint – you need a Layer in Screen mode. Curves will help Darken Darks
and Lighten Whites. But it will only give you so much. The B&W
Layer’s Opacity really helps with Blacks. As does the Gradient
E. Next open a B&W Adjustment Layer. Set Opacity 60%
Hint – this is the best adjustment for getting Darks Darker. Adjust the
opacity 1st, then the Red and Magenta sliders.
F. Next Open a Channel Adjustment Layer. Open Top Menu – select
B&W with red Filter. No other Adjustments are needed.
NOTE - Selecting this B&W with Red Filter does not show up when
Sharing the Action. It does work when you make this action on your
G. make these Layers a Group. Add a Mask. This is to bring back colors from the
After running the Action where to start depends on what colors you start with.
What I have found in testing 10 or more images:
1. Gradient Map - Uncheck the Reverse Box to see if it a better starting point.
2. Adjust Opacity on B&W Adjustment Layer. Don’t play with sliders yet.
3. Work in both Curves Layer and B/Contrast layer.
4. Gradient Map Layer Adjust Opacity
5. B&W Layer play with sliders.
Now try small adjustments on the different layers and make notes for future images.
I hope it works as well as it does for me.
Again I would like to thank Ronny Harris for all his input and help.
