Re: Crisp look? Sharpening in LAB?

I have a question too. I just read a book about retouching by Gry Garness. She uses Unsharp mask and then she goes to Edit>Fade (Unsharp Mask) and on the Mode dropdown she chooses Luminosity. Is this the same thing as layer mode luminosity or its something different? I'm asking because I dont udnerstand why she is doing it in such complicated way

The same. The idea is the same as converting to Lab and only sharpening the L channel but with less data loss, faster and more control (opacity). It is to avoid adding color aliasing due to the sharpening.

Thanks Andrew, this is very interesting...I also got hold of the Dan Margulis sharpening method...I can imagine that his long experience in prepress was a base for developing his sharpeningmethod, he would have tested it as you did or not?

Only Dan can answer that. And to what output needs? Just CMYK halftone? What about ink jet, contone, even web? From RGB data or just CMYK? Tested how? So I can’t imagine what he did. I don’t believe he ever specified the query.

Andrew, I would like to suggest to you to read his book http://www.amazon.com/Photoshop-LAB-.../dp/0321356780 - you will find there plenty of tests and image comparisons - you can even follow these examples and do your own tests within different colorspaces.

Please, try to pay some respect to other people as other people trying to pay respect to you and your opinions …

Regards, Filip

P.S. I am not going to continue this discussion. I am sorry for that in advance.

I have the book! I’ve read it. If this is your idea of good testing methodology, we have little more to discuss.

Re: Crisp look? Sharpening in LAB?

thanks for your time to reply. I once more read the entire post since I really am fascinated by this sharpeningthing.... I was a bit confused by the article Bruce Fraser wrote and the information here.
From your point of view, what would you consider the best sharpeningmethod for
1.web 900 pixels wide
2.print 12"x18" at 300 ppi
for instance.

I can imagine that since 2006 methods have changed or improved, I was just curious what you would prefer.

Actually no. About the only new functionality that was introduced in terms of sharpening was Smart Sharpen. Bruce tested it thoroughly and didn’t find anything useful or a reason to incorporate into PhotoKit Sharpener. After Bruce died, Mac Holbert (formally of Nash Editions) took over and again found nothing new in Photoshop to incorporate. He did tweak some of the routines a tad, for version II, adding a lot of new creative sharpening options but really nothing in terms of capture and output sharpening the excepting being output to web (people are using larger displays so they needed output web sharpening targeting larger documents).
