Pulling my hair out

I've tried everything in PS CS5 to make the black streak of hair go away and look natural in this picture......
HAIR

Seems easy, but I can't come close. Can anyone suggest how to do it? Thanks

Re: Pulling my hair out

Welcome to RetouchPro, tvtv. Glad you found us.
I would tackle this problem using '"grafting" ie copy a streak onto a new layer use free transform to make it fit the flow, luminosity etc, add a black mask and paint with a white brush sized to hair width and paint in where needed...

This may illustrate what I mean: http://vimeo.com/19879892

Welcome to RetouchPRO Hope you enjoy your stay here and make lots of friends. Poke around, ask questions, have fun!

Which black streak?

If you use Photoshop you can post fairly large pictures which are under 100k using the 'save for web' function in Photoshop as described here:
Size, Quality and/or Format your Attached Images.. (Click here)

How to attach Files/Images to your Posts or Threads:

If you want to post a larger resolution that is over 100K then you can host your image elsewhere and attach a link in the thread (as you did here), but also please attach an under 100K version (so the thread remains useful in the future, regardless of external links).

Sample was done using the following:
Patch Tool... then Shft+Ctrl+F (fade tool) adjust slider till the hair looks good
<repeat as needed>

Also... Clone tool set to 'Lighten'... Select area in close proximity ... clone ... then Fade if needed.... set clone tool to darken to add some darker areas then fade also

Re: Pulling my hair out

I've been retouching pictures of this person (can you guess who it is?) for two years. I don't even want to think about how much time this forum would have saved me.

Re: Pulling my hair out

AKMac, way to go....John Lennon it is! I photographed John and Yoko at the Record Plant in 1973. Unfortunately and inexplicably, I did not treat the negatives well over time which has cost me hundreds of hours retouching them. The negs are very thin. I wish I knew what you guys know. It's been a tough road. When the website goes up, I'll post the url. There are 26 never before seen photos I am going to sell.

Re: Pulling my hair out

Yes, I recognised him from that famous black streak of hair, first noticed and admired by a famous barber in Penny Lane. (Who, incidentally, has a big backlog of retouching work, if anybody's interested!)
