Frequency Separation in PS Elements possible?

I can not afford Photoshop. Heresy, I know, but it can't be helped. I am not a pro. Elements does not have the "apply image" command so you can not make a high frequency layer. I found two turorials to get around this problem. Can anyone comment on whether they are true frequency separation or whether there is another way to get around the lack of "apply image." Thanks for any advice!

Re: Frequency Separation in PS Elements possible?

The best way to tell is stamp the split layers back together and set to blend mode difference and compare to the original layer.... Oh I forget elements might not have difference blend mode doh..f

But High pass and G Blur combined is the old way not as exact...
