Color picker/RGB values question

I have bee messing around alot with the color picker, color sampler tool and Info palette lately. Now, for example if I have a very, very dull red which can be something like R=98 G=50 B=45, photoshop would categorize this as a red since the R value is the highest correct? I am asking this because when I use a tool such as Hue/Saturation where you target Reds,Green, Blues, etc. and I want to change Reds for example, this tool will affect any color that has a dominant R value only correct? Same for blue or green no? Is this how PS works in terms of picking and altering certain colors?

Yes, a higher proportion of a color would indicate, in your example, it is ‘red’ (which is just word). But numbers alone don’t define color appearance. R=98 G=50 B=45 is a different color in sRGB than Adobe RGB than ProPhoto (but again, it is red, or more red then green and blue).

Yes Andrew I do remember us conversing about how one set of values in one RGB space will show up as something different in another colorspace. But regardless of which RGB space you are in, the dominant value tells you which color it is right? Just to make sure I get this.

...Not only dominant, you should couple your selection with limits & feathering adjustments. Here more on HSL
