How to remove object shadows from picture?

I work on a picture like this and I want to remove shadow from the pitch and also from the players. Is there any way to achieve this?

If you have RAW image you can push the shadows for 2 or 3 steps and blend it with original exposure. Raw will handle extreme processing better then regular jpg.
What an ugly shadow. Wouldn't it be easier to come and reshoot the scene next time they play?
There is no much action on the field anyway.

Re: How to remove object shadows from picture?

Actually I will try to handle those shadows programitacally.( Maybe MatLab, Java, openCv)
I have an algorithm which works on image and detects the shadow area but I need an understanding about how to manipulate shadow area pixels. "Simply increasing the RGB values depending on non-shadow area?" "Is it possible to convert a shadowed color using the non-shadowed color values?"

I will also try to run this shadow removing operation on video. But I need to figure out how to remove shadow from a picture first.

With such a great difference in luminosity, it strikes me that Lab has to be a good route to take and treated it as a colour matching exercise.

I created a mask from the red channel, changed mode to Lab and matched the two areas with a masked curve.

It'll still need a bit of work, but it gets you a large part of the way.
