Need help with jewelry shots

Hey guys!
I'm new to jewelry photography and been trying to achieve good results with no luck. My issue is that I've been playing around with three strobes usually placing two on the sides of the item and one directly behind. The advantage of doing this is that the background is completely clipped so I don't need to crop and it looks natural. But the images get washed out and I lose contrast and sharpness. This photo was taken with two strobes on either side leaving the background completely darkened. I like this image, there's good contrast and it's tack sharp. Is there a technique to cropping jewelery shots without it having that "cropped" look? I'm pretty photoshop savvy and I know this shot is way too dark so it needs some adjustments but I can't seem to get past this cropping step satisfied.

What gear are you using..macrolens? Did you try focusstacking, using a slide and small aperture...then moving the camera on the slide each time after an exposure a bit back..making about 5 to 10 images and combining them in photoshop with merge.

dcb- The shot is decent enough, but there ain't no jewelry photography without post production. It's just not going to happen.
Once you silo the ring with a path/mask, you can do anything, including dropping out the bkg while holding the reflection and shadows.
